What is Role-Play?
Role-play is creating a character, and playing a role in him. It can be a Police Officer, Hitman, National Guard, or just a regular civilian. Role-play for most is very easy. But in reality - It's a task. Roleplaying you have to create your characters bio, and Explain, Explain, EXPLAIN. Where he grew up, how his parents were like, what are his advantages, and disadvantages, etc.
Meta-GamingOnce you've started out, you get the whole Role-Play idea. However, there are RULES in Role-play. One of those happens to be "Metagaming" which is when you use In-Character, and Out-Of-Character together. It's something like...
Marcus_Pierce Says: Hey, man. Got a name?
Cubert_Farnsworth Says: LOL? Read my name-tag, doofus.
That is just an example. In Role-play, think of it all as if real-life. That includes taking out stuff from the game, such as Name-Tags, and other things that WOULD NOT be there if it were real life.
Power-GamingAnother Role-Play rule, it's when you do the following:
Force Actions Upon players
Use objects you don't have
Do immpossible things in real life.
Forcing actions upon players is simple - if you do an attack, just attempt it.
E.G:
* Enious W. Notice's a fulnerable point at Michael, and throws a punch to the left of his face - ATTEMPTING to jab him.
/Do Succeed | Fail
That is when the other player simply replies his turn.
Is that so hard?
Use of Objects that you didn't aquire RPly - It's easy, really. In Role-play, you have to RPly get everything you have. You can't just say "I RPly built it while I was offline" that just shows you are lazy. Or---
EG
* Enious W. Glares around himself, and scurries over to the plane.
* Enious W. Notices the chamber is unlocked, and climbs into it, and thinks maybe the plane is chipped with a tracking divice.
* Enious W. Get's off, and unpockets a jamming chip.
* Enious W. Slaps it onto the plane
Now, that'd be PG if you didn't RPly get that jamming chip! Just RPly get what you need!
Doing impossible things in real life - HUGE Flaw of role-play. This is where you do things that you just cannot do in real life. It could be just be when you toss a tank to the moon, or just dodging bullets. I've seen many cases of these types of figures in my Role-play life.
Example
* Enious W. Notice's Bob's finger movement on the trigger, and dodges out of the way before the shot was fired
That is just pure Powergame. In real life, you think your body would be able to react that fast? No. IRL, you can't see a person's finger movement, then move out of the way. The average human reaction time is about 0.5-1.0 seconds MINIMUM. So, please, think of yourself as if you were there, and what you'd do. Remember, it isn't about winning the battle, but about having fun as a Role-player.
Watch what's around you!Aswell have I seen many cases of this. Where a player staggers into a bar, full of blood, shot, and collapses, and players continue to discuss on which flower smells best. You have to think pay attention to what's around you.
Example...
*Lightning strikes outside the bar, a huge bang rumble the bar, a flash illuminates outside the window.
Marcus: Yeah, I saw too. *Laughs*
That was complete ignoring of what happened. In real life, you can't just ignore things like that like it never happened...
*Lightning strikes outside the bar, a huge bang rumble the bar, a flash illuminates outside the window.*
*Marcus get's startled, almost falling off his bar stool, he jumps off, and scurries to a window to see what had happened*
Is a far more better reaction.
Don't one-line!This is another thing to role-play. It's not a rule, but a tip. When players do
Marcus: Surely, you're wrong.
*Marcus chuckles forcably*
Marcus: I doubt he actually did that.
*Marcus Takes another sip of his drink.*
Marcus: I mean,
Marcus: Who is crazy enough to do that?
That is perfectly fine, but a better way to RP is like...
Marcus: Surely, you're wrong. *Chuckles forcably* I doubt he actually did that. *Takes another sip of his drink.* I mean, who is crazy enough to that?
Tips to being successful in Roleplay
Use good grammar - No one likes internet slang in Role-play, it's MG, and it makes you look lazy.
Roleplay Fair - Roleplay isn't about winning the battle, but about having fun.
Roleplay driving - In real life, you don't drive like a maniac high on crack, AND drunk, slamming into poles. It's just very Non-RP.
Roleplay crashes - As in real life, if you slam into a brick wall at 30 MPH you don't just drive away. You'd most likely be in critical condition. I suggest you RP these types of things too!
I hope I helped.
